The railings , made of ash, double up as bookshelves. The ladder sides taper with the steps getting wider as you go down. The sides continue up to the height of the top of the gate as handrails so you feel secure when starting backwards down the ladder. The steps are made from a large chunk of yew the Owners of the house had bought  a while ago from a tree surgeon neighbour.

This bench, made from larch, was an 80th birthday present for a mother from her three children.
